Charlotte Nelson

Associate Specialist
What I do:
Charlotte completed her undergraduate studies at the University of California, Santa Cruz where she earned degrees in Biochemistry and Bioinformatics. She began her graduate studies in Bioinformatics at the University of California, San Francisco where she joined Dr. Atul Butte and Dr. Sergio Baranzini’s labs. Charlotte’s research has been driven by the dichotomy between biomedical data generation and patient care application. To address this problem, she has merged over five decades of biomedical research with Electronic Health Records (EHRs). By combining a patient’s phenotypes (in the EHRs) with our knowledge from biomedical research, we can infer what is happening to our patients internally on a deep biological level. Embedding both phenotypic and biological information about our patients into machine-readable barcodes moves us towards precision medicine by enabling novel patient stratification, patient trajectory prediction, and tailored treatments design.
